Okay, strap in, because this is going to be all over the place. I recently managed to escape the video games for a hot second — yes, miracles do happen. Who would’ve thought, right? But don’t get too excited; I’m still a proud nerd deep down. Anyway, ended up at this wild thing they call the UK Games Expo 2025. Why? Well, why not?
So, picture this: Birmingham, England, early June. The NEC is jam-packed with board games as far as the eye can see. It’s this huge labyrinth of gaming tables. Kind of like a video game expo, but swap out the TVs for dice and cards. Merchandise everywhere too, by the way. Got through it all without selling my soul, so that’s a win. If you’re planning to go, maybe bring a bit of cash. Trust me.
This thing’s spread across two spots. The main circus is at the NEC. Start with the Buy, Sell, and Swap section. You feel me? It’s like a treasure hunt where old games get new homes — some gems to be found. I mean, who knew I’d leave with bags full of goodies I didn’t know I needed? Time flew. Seriously. Poof, gone.
Saturday, though, I strolled over to the Hilton. Caught these live shows — comedians doing their thing with Werewolf Live and some other quirky stuff. Oh, and Knightmare Live! Let’s just say, nostalgia hit hard. Could write an essay on that 80s gem. It’s, um, unique. Anyway, it’s on the web in all its dated glory if you feel brave enough.
After all the laughs, I hunkered down at the Hilton’s open gaming halls. Loads of people just chilling, playing, bonding over cardboard. It’s kind of beautiful, just saying. They have this game library setup — genius idea. Every town should have one. Period. And don’t even get me started on the roleplaying halls. Nerd heaven, pretty much.
Sunday. Back at NEC. Just, wow. Like, eight hundred companies? It’s insane. Everywhere I looked, something new. Felt like a kid in a candy store, no kidding. If you want to blow your budget on funky dice or a gaming table — or meet your favorite artist — this is it. Trust me.
One tip: if all this sounds like your jam and you’re considering next year’s event, snag your tickets early-ish. Hotels fill up faster than I can down a coffee. Plan your escape from reality now, basically.
If board games are your thing, this expo is a no-brainer. Whether it’s making new friends or just diving headfirst into the world of tabletop fun, you’ll love it. Next year, I’m doing all three days, no shortcuts. This is your cue — go make it happen.
