Alright, so there’s this wild handheld gaming device on the scene. By some tech wizardry, this guy Qingchen DIY from China’s Bilibili – which I honestly didn’t think I’d ever check out, but here we are – slapped together this handheld beast with a 12.5-inch, 4K screen. Like, whoa. It’s not your regular handheld; it’s got the guts of a legit high-end PC.
Now, you know how everyone’s all about AMD when it comes to these nifty portable gamers, right? I mean, think of the Asus ROG Ally X, which I swear everyone and their cousin is talking about, and the Steam Deck. Killer stuff. But Intel, not wanting to be left out, has also thrown its hat in with some serious competition. They teamed up with MSI to put out this Lunar Lake thing. Ever heard of it? Yeah, me neither, until I got sidetracked diving into this stuff.
But what’s nuts here is Qingchen’s decision to cram in an Intel Core i9-14900HX and an Nvidia RTX 4090 Laptop GPU into one handheld. I had this random thought – like, maybe there’s this undeclared Intel-Nvidia rivalry with AMD. Or maybe not. Anyway.
So, this setup is in, what was it, a Tongfang chassis? Sounds fancy, right? But, like, are we supposed to know this company? Supposedly, it’s big in Hong Kong and makes stuff for brands I’ve actually heard of, like, um, XMG or something. They supply a bunch of Western PC makers. Weird how you learn stuff while barely paying attention.
And performance? Oh man. You’ve got this powerhouse CPU and that GPU which has, like, a gazillion CUDA cores. This modder pulled a crafty move using this laptop duo to power a smaller handheld. The expectation must be, like, massive – just not literally this time. But, the thermal management seems on point, which is a miracle considering the powerhouse they crammed in there.
Storage? Yeah, you’d hope they beefed up on that. And they did: 64GB of RAM and two, not one, but two 2TB SSDs. Imagine running out of space. Unthinkable. Then there’s the battery, which… uh, no. Seriously, 50Wh? Can’t see this lasting long when truly unleashed. But hey, it’s for those brief gaming sessions between power outlets, I suppose.
As for the future of Intel and Nvidia handhelds? Well, that’s a staring contest between tech giants I didn’t know I cared about. Nvidia might do its own thing with upcoming Nvidia N1 and N1X chips, slated for 2026. Not these pocket PCs I’d want, but the tech’s certainly evolving fast.
Alright, got off track there. Does this mean AMD’s out of the game? Not by a long shot. They’ve got time to swing back with something groundbreaking too. Keep tabs if you care. Or don’t. Who really knows how this battle will roll out?
