Whoa, so after like, what, three decades? Heretic’s finally hitting consoles again. Crazy, right? I mean, Hexen too! Haven’t seen that on a console since the OG days on Playstation, Saturn, and Nintendo 64. They slapped a “Heretic + Hexen” sticker on this re-release, thanks to Nightdive Studios — you know, the folks who love revamping old games.
Anyway, there’s a whole bunch crammed in here. Like, not just the original games, but Hexen’s “Deathkings of the Dark Citadel” expansion, some fresh new expansions, and bonus stuff. It’s a lot. Seriously.
Okay, let’s dig into Heretic first. It’s like, Doom, meet swords and spells. Not dissing it, but yeah, Heretic’s got those Doom vibes hard. Same tech quirks as Doom, but it’s got fancier level designs. You’ll spot the Doom similarities in the enemies and weapons, pretty much like a medieval cousin or something.
Now, Hexen? Whole different beast. It takes that old-school shooter style and flips it. You pick from three classes with their own quirks and go wild with exploration and puzzles. It’s got a Zelda-meets-Metroid kinda feel mixed with shooter action. Weird combo, huh?
There’s more, though! Expansions galore! One for Heretic and two for Hexen. That ‘96 expansion for Hexen was cool, but man, the new stuff — Heretic’s “Faith Renewed” feels like it pushed the limits even more. Hexen’s new expansions? Pretty solid stuff, kind of prefer them over the original “Deathkings” expansion, but nothing beats the classic vibe. Still, thumbs up.
But here’s the kicker — this save system is a hot mess. Jumping between five (ugh, really) games, all using a single save slot is just a nightmare. So there you are, happily quicksaving in Hexen, then boom, you overwrite it in Heretic. Good luck finding that right save file.
Visually, Nightdive’s kept it real. It’s HD, but hey, don’t expect Switch 2 levels. You’re capped at 1080p. Aspect ratios, crosshairs, soundtracks, they’ve got options. But, you ever notice when the HUD’s full screen you see the skybox do this weird tile thing? Weird! N64 didn’t have that. Didn’t check the PC version, maybe it’s a new hiccup?
Speaking of N64, that version was tops back in the day — like, legit the best version of Hexen on console, even though it ditched the cutscenes. Playing ’em side by side, you see how spot on it was. But, gotta say, I kind of wish I could filter those textures now. Yeah, yeah, it’d look weird, but let’s get a CRT filter in here, folks.
So, Heretic + Hexen? Awesome collection. One’s really good and the other’s a total masterpiece. New content just beefs it all up. But ugh, that save system and visual presentation is a bit of a clunker. A CRT filter would help loads, honestly. Yet, better than dragging out an ancient Nintendo 64 or enduring the janky Playstation or Saturn versions. Fingers crossed for more Heretic/Hexen goodness in the future!
