The excitement among my colleagues for the new Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake stream and surprise release is palpable. But for those of us keeping tabs on what’s next, there’s a little nugget of news: Todd Howard has given us a nod that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still on the horizon. He’s even mentioned that the team is actively working on it.
The exact quote, shared just before we dove into the feast of news and videos about the Oblivion Remaster, was, “obviously we’re working on the 6th chapter here.”
Amazing, right? This is the juiciest tidbit we’ve gotten about The Elder Scrolls 6 since back in March 2024. That’s when Bethesda let slip that some early versions were in the hands of testers. They even hinted that it was fun to play – which, I guess, is reassuring, right?
Before that revelation, there was an intriguing tidbit from a former Skyrim designer, who advised us not to expect updates until about six months before release. That was back in October 2023. Just a month before that, Phil Spencer mentioned that he thought ES6 was still about five years away from launch. At the time, this seemed a bit of a stretch, but now, two years later, details remain as scarce as ever.
Realistically, Bethesda hasn’t shared substantial updates for ages. As of August 2023, they confirmed that development was underway, a full five years after its initial announcement at E3. Maybe it’s just me being speculative here, but could they have jumped the gun with the announcement?
All jokes and sarcasm set aside, it’s somewhat comforting to catch a whiff of life from Elder Scrolls 6. I mean, it’s been ages—I was still a student when they first announced it. Now, I’m navigating adulthood with its joys like bills, bad habits, and dating apps. Bethesda, revered as one of the top first-person RPG developers, is likely concocting something legendary. How about throwing in a piece of concept art, though? Honestly, Liam Neeson in Taken had more clues about his daughter than we have about this game’s existence.
