Alright, so let’s just throw this out there right away – Splitgate 2 is the one to watch. Forget the rest – Call of Duty, Marathon, what-have-you. I mean, the first Splitgate kinda hit this sweet spot between Halo and Portal. Really nailed it, but I guess it sort of fell short in terms of, I don’t know, keeping people hooked long-term? Anyway, this sequel is trying to flip all that on its head. Get this: there’s an open beta starting now – no end date in sight, which is pretty wild. And, oh, all your progress sticks around for the big launch later. Cool, right?
So, I tried Splitgate 2 during a playtest not too long ago, and, yeah, it’s still got it. The gameplay, I mean. They’ve pumped it up with Unreal Engine 5 or whatever, so everything looks snazzier, moves smoother. Gunplay still has that Halo vibe – which, let’s face it, is what we’re here for, right? And portaling? Still a big deal. Has this steep learning curve, too. Plus, there’s this whole class-based abilities thing now, adding extra layers, like an onion or whatever.
Look, the live service model is a tough gig – cracked my skull trying to figure it out. But 1047 Games is tossing a smorgasbord of stuff out there. Crazy amounts of modes and maps. You like classic arena shooters? They got ‘em. Into huge 24-player chaos? Yep, that too. And speaking of chaos, they’ve got this new weapon – the Borealis. Fancy name, but it’s just a carbine that charges up. Still cool, though.
In a nifty twist, there’s this open beta battle pass before the proper release. And here’s something amusing – you can hunt the devs while you’re in there. They’re flaunting these ‘flaming disco ball’ skins, so easy targets, right? Take one down, and bam, you get a free skin. Keeps it interesting, at least.
The biggie here is something they call The Lab. It’s like Halo’s Forge, but you get to build your own maps and whatnot. Better yet, you’re not alone – drag up to 15 other folks into your sandbox. Makes for some chaotic creation, I imagine.
So yeah, that open beta? It’s going, like, indefinitely – at least till the full game’s out in the summer. And you don’t lose your progress. Which is neat, honestly. You can play it on PC through Steam, Microsoft, Epic, your Steam Deck, Xbox, PlayStation – the whole shebang.
Anyway, if you’re into multiplayer games or those sweet free PC games, you might wanna check it out. Just a thought. Also, follow us on Google News because, you know, we do this stuff daily. Oh, and there’s a Discord – come chat if you want.
