I was scrolling through whatever I was scrolling through—can’t remember now—when I stumbled on this fascinating tidbit. So, listen up: there’s this gang of modders, Team Beef, who seem determined to bring all our wildest VR dreams to life. They’re cooking up an unofficial VR port of Counter-Strike 1.6 for the Quest and Pico headsets. Just imagine that, the real deal from the good old days, right in your face. Wild, right?
I always thought VR was a bit much—until now, maybe. These folks have already dragged classics like Tomb Raider and Quake 4 into the VR world. And, let me tell you, it seems they’re on fire.
Counter-Strike 1.6, just to jog your memory, is like the definitive Half-Life mod-turned-game that took 2000 by storm. I remember playing it way back—well, who doesn’t, right?
Anyway—oh wait, forgot to mention, they’re using this game engine, Xash3D FWGS? No clue what that means, but it sounds important, lol. It supposedly lines up just right with Valve’s original GoldSrc engine. Sounds techy, huh? Team Beef’s also saying something about a multiplatform client from Velaron—yep, I googled that. Interesting stuff.
So, cross-play is a thing. And easy server creation? Sweet, isn’t it? Throw in 6DoF motion controls and I’d say they’re onto something big. Though, their teaser didn’t show that feature yet. Maybe intentional. Or maybe they’re just teasing us. Who knows.
Anyway, for those who are die-hard fans and willing to chip in on their Patreon, early access is about to roll around soonish. Keep an eye out—or ear, or whatever works for you.
Geez, that was a lot, wasn’t it?
