So, here’s the scoop. Virtuos, the co-development bigwig, is laying people off. Ugh. Heard it first from this French journalist—Gauthier Andres—on, wait for it, BlueSky. Yup, they’re cutting about 7% of their crew, which is roughly 300 folks, if math serves me right.
Anyway, Virtuos chimed in later, saying 200 of those cuts are hitting their team in Asia. Another 70 face the axe in Europe. And in France? Like, less than ten—if they’re counting correctly, phew.
They’re saying this shake-up is all to meet changing partner needs. Whatever that means. Game development’s getting crazier, apparently. So, they’re shuffling things around to pump up high-value stuff like cool game engineering and sophisticated art. Oh, and all that live service jazz. Makes sense… kinda?
On the bright side, if there is one, the folks being let go will get some kind of separation pay. Plus, a hand with job hunting and maybe another gig within the company. Small wins? Maybe.
Virtuos, if you didn’t know, helped with The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered earlier this year. And they’re working on Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Big stuff. They’ve also pitched in on Dune: Awakening, Cyberpunk 2077, and Sea of Thieves—so yeah, their fingerprints are everywhere.
This isn’t an isolated thing, sadly. Layoffs seem to be trending—Microsoft just did a massive fourth round of cuts, all crammed into the last 18 months. What a time to be alive, right? Ugh.
